The
English word, ”worship,” comes from an Anglo-Saxon word,
“weorthscipe” which meant “to ascribe worth”. When we worship God
we are setting aside time to express our love for and thanksgiving
to God in our praise, thanksgiving and offerings.
As we both offer
ourselves to God, and receive from God in worship, our lives are
shaped in crucial ways. The hymns we sing, the music and anthems we
hear, the prayers we hear and pray, the reading of Scripture and
hearing of sermons, even the act of sitting with people different
from us influence the kind of person we will become.
In addition, in
our mobile and hyperactive society, the act of coming together as a
community of faith for worship provides space and opportunity to
slow down, reflect, and be reminded that we are not alone--the
Spirit of God is with us when we worship.
At First
Presbyterian we have two worship services each Sunday morning, year
round.
Both services are
in the sanctuary, one at 8:45 and the other at 11:00 o’clock.
The services are
identical except for the music. Most Sundays the Chancel Choir
(adult choir) helps lead worship at the 11:00 service only.
In terms of music
and worship style, both services are traditional.
The 8:45 service
typically has fewer worshipers, although in the summer months more
worshipers take advantage of the earlier hour.
During the year
we have special services at Christmas and at Easter.
There are
nurseries provided for both services for children up to
kindergarten.
Kindergarteners
and first graders come to the beginning of the 11:00 service and go
to their own Children’s Church during the second hymn.
Our congregation
is delighted to have visitors worshiping with us.
CD copies of our
worship services are available on request.
Please join us in
worship!
