Summer Trips
One of the most formative experiences young people can have in
Youth Ministry is in time spent away from home, where intentional
thought about and practice of one’s faith can take place and begin
to shape how people can live as a disciple of Christ wherever they are.
In other words,
if you’re a young person you really, REALLY, should take time to go
on one of our summer trips.
They’re fun.
They’re faith building. They’re life changing. Check out the
descriptions of each trip below and make your plans to attend next
summer now!
High School
Mission Trip:
(completed 9th-completed 12th grades)

Usually held the
last full week in June, the High School trip is a highlight for the
entire year, let alone the summer. During the fall youth and adult
advisors pick a spot and the type of ministry they fill called to
do, and when summer rolls around they go and do it!

Though each
mission trip is different, a general framework is work in the
mornings and early afternoons; grab a shower and snack, play cards
or guitar, take a nap in the late afternoon ; enjoy an evening time
of games and reflection on the day’s work; lather, rinse, repeat.

Mission trip work
usually involves some sort of construction project and/or helping
local agencies (such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, or food
banks) in the work they do.
The most recent
Mission Trips have been to Pittsburgh (2005), the Gulf Coast of
Alabama (2006) and Charleston, SC (2007), and Mullens, WV (2008).
This September,
the High School Youth will begin discussions on where our mission
trip in 2009 will be.
High School
Youth Conference, Montreat, NC:
(completed 9th-completed 12th grades)

Worship with over
1,000 other youth and adults from all over the Southeast; play games
and recreation so fast and furious your head will spin; engage in
thoughtful and meaningful discussions about God, faith, and life in
small groups that value honesty and confidentiality; build
relationships both with strangers and old friends that last a
lifetime—those are just some of the selling points for the annual
High School Youth Conference in Montreat, NC.

First
Presbyterian has just recently gotten back in to the flow of
conference ministry at Montreat and are establishing a tradition of
attending the Week V conference, typically the last week in July.
Cost for this trip is around $200, although scholarship assistance
is available by making a request to the Associate Pastor for Youth
Ministry.

Massanetta
Springs Middle School Youth Conference:

An event that
occurs the Thursday-Sunday after July 4, and that makes an
impression that last much longer, the Middle School Youth Conference
at Massanetta Springs is a place where faith is put into practice as
Middle Schoolers engage with the Word and presence of God in a
variety of ways.
The ‘Netta, as it
is lovingly referred to, immerses Middle Schoolers in theme
presentations, worship, games, small group discussions, and
workshops in which young people can explore and come to know more
fully the love of God.
Cost for this
trip is around $200, although scholarship assistance is available by
making a request to the Associate pastor for Youth Ministry.
Information for
2009 will be accessible here and mailed to all Middle
Schoolers in January 2009.
